This year’s garden is simple and small. With only a few months left living at our current residence, we decided to wait until next year to plant our dream garden. However, we couldn’t let the year go by without planting some herbs and vegetables.
Peter is the inspiration for our garden this Spring! We want him to learn how to garden, nourish and tend to God’s creation, and discover the beauty of growth! He is participating in each aspect of our family’s gardening – from picking out the seeds to planting to eating!
Our garden’s theme this year is pizza! We are planting herbs and vegetables that we use to make our favorite pizza sauce and toppings: tomatoes, oregano, basil, peppers, and green onions! We have been saving and cleaning egg shells for the past month to use as our seed starting pots!
Eggshells are a great option because they are full of minerals, protein, and vitamins that serve as an incredible fertilizer! Eggshells also biodegrade into the soil when your seedlings are transplanted. Just puncture a small hole at the bottom of each egg shell for drainage, place the shell back into the carton, fill with a little soil, and plant your seeds!
We soaked our seeds the night before we planted them to help them germinate. Peter waters them everyday and to his joy, some of the seeds have already sprouted! We are excited to watch the plants continue to grow…and to eat the pizza in a few months!
