Finding Philothea Painting Our Piano White

Ever since we moved into our home this summer, we wanted to get a piano for our living room! There is a perfect spot for one against the wall, right in between our two built-in bookcases. In late August, Mike texted me that he found one (for free!) on the “letgo” app! He rented a U-Haul truck after work and with the help of a friend, transported it into our living room.

I loved the piano, but I wasn’t crazy about the color and how it looked in our living room. Then I came across this post from Bethany Menzel, a blogger I have been following for years! I loved the look of her white piano and decided to follow her tutorial!

What I did:

I went to the paint section in Lowe’s and asked for the cheapest interior eggshell white paint available. I got a gallon of Valspar Pro for twelve dollars. After reading Bethany’s tutorial, I decided not to sand the piano. A lot of people were saying that it could ruin the sound. I covered the surrounding floor in old sheets, taped down the keys, and started painting! It took six coats. I really love how it turned out!

What I’d do differently:

  • Purchase less paint – a quart instead of a gallon. Even with six coats, we have so much left over!
  • Take more time taping down and covering the keys.
  • Prime the piano before painting.
  • Use a small roller for the larger sections, in addition to the paintbrush.
  • Lacquer over the last coat of paint. (I can and may still do this!)

If you have any questions, let me know! Or if you know of a good piano tuner in the Buffalo area, let us know, too! Are you planning to paint your piano? We’d love to hear!
