We do our best to make as many of our household cleaning products as possible. Homemade cleaning products are safer for our family and the environment. We have saved so much money, too! Most commercial cleaners include a plethora of harmful chemicals in their products, some that have even been linked to certain cancers and to infertility. We are slowly swapping our toxic cleaners for safe, homemade, natural ones.
This past weekend I made a makeup brush cleaner. If you wear makeup regularly, I recommend incorporating washing your makeup brushes into your cleaning rhythm or routine. Makeup brushes quickly become coated with residue, bacteria, oil, dirt, dead skin cells, and dust. Dirty makeup brushes can clog your pores, and cause acne and allergies.
This recipe is a natural way to clean your makeup brushes. It is safe for your skin and for your brushes. Most homemade makeup brush cleaner recipes include rubbing alcohol – something that I don’t feel comfortable using on my face regularly. Rubbing alcohol can also dry out your makeup brushes. Instead I use lavender essential oil – it is safe for your skin and brushes, and is naturally antibiotic, antiviral, antifungal, and antibacterial. Lavender essential oil can also help treat acne and eczema. I add a few drops into the recipe. If you don’t like the scent of lavender, you can substitute it with tangerine essential oil, another great oil that is safe for your skin!
This recipe makes about a cup of cleaner for my three makeup brushes. Halve, double, or triple the recipe depending on the number of brushes you have to clean!
