Insights on Literature, etiquette, and Beauty from a Catholic wife and mom

Mother and Son

There is nothing that could have completely prepared me to be a parent. Yet there are experiences, tools, and insights that helped in aiding me to parent as best as possible. These three books profoundly changed my life, and in turn, these three books changed my family. I felt so called to share these books with you all, hoping that they can change your life and your family for the better.

I write this post specifically for mothers, but I write it also for fathers, leaders, teachers, priest, religious – truly anyone who is in contact with children. Mike has read these books alongside me, and he has gained so much wisdom and insight from them. I recommend reading these books with your spouse.

Run to get these books! I am linking each one to a site you can purchase them through. Start reading them as soon as possible. If you are in any way feeling overwhelmed or emotionally tired, or if you are questioning your purpose and path to heaven through motherhood, read these books. They have helped me not only in my role as mother, but in every single relationship I have.

Three Books Every Mother Should Read

  1. A Mother’s Rule of Life by Holly Pierlot: If you are considering purchasing only one book on my list- buy this one. This book has given me such hope. Since becoming a wife and mother, I have always lived from day to day, with just a very loose routine. Prior to marriage, I thrived on routine, order, and schedules. This book has shown me something I already know deep within my heart – that a daily, weekly, and yearly rhythm brings peace, growth, and holiness within my soul and family. It has equipped me with the knowledge of how to make the absolute best use of my time and most importantly to grown in sanctity and holiness in my vocation as wife and mother.
  2. Hold On to Your Kids by Gordon Neufeld and Gabor Maté: My mother first introduced us to this book. She sent this book to me, along with a letter that said, “I so very, very much wish that I had this before you were born as a reference for each and every day of my motherhood.” This book teaches the reasons why children often look to their peers for direction versus their parents and ways to prevent this. I am so thankful that I read this book now when Peter is just a baby. This book taught me to be intentional with how I interact with Peter. It also taught me so much about myself, and my relationships with others.
  3. Strong Mothers, Strong Sons by Meg Meeker: This book gave me such joy and strength. After reading it, I feel such excitement that I have the privilege to raise Peter to become an extraordinary man. It enlightened me on the beautiful role mothers play in their children’s life. Even if you do not have a son, read this book! It has shown me where I need to seek healing in my life and it helped me to better understand men.

Mothers – your vocation is incredible, it is the heart of the home and the heart of society. It is holy, good, and beautiful. If you have chosen marriage and motherhood as your vocation, it is your path to heaven! I guarantee, if you read these three books and take the words that are written in them to heart and put them into practice – they will help you reach our heavenly home.
