Insights on Literature, etiquette, and Beauty from a Catholic wife and mom

After being away from Claire and Peter for a week, I wanted to have a family weekend together. They were up visiting Claire’s parents, who live about an hour away from Lake Placid, known for hosting the 1932 and 1980 Olympics, but it often gets a different kind of reputation from this. I love Lake Placid, as it was one of the places Claire and I went to when we were first dating. So I went ahead and booked a hotel – a perfect place for a getaway weekend that wasn’t too far of a drive for Peter (come on, long car rides are tough for anybody).

On our way we stopped at this incredible ice cream shop in Saranac Lake named Donnelly’s. They only have one flavor a day, and that day it was Chocolate and Mountain Almond twist.  I’m a confessed chocoholic so this was right up my alley!

We arrived in Lake Placid later in the day and decided to walk the shops on the main street.  There is certainly something for everyone here, but my favorites definitely have to be the USA Hockey Store and the Saratoga Olive Oil Company. They make a variety of olive oils but their best kept secret is their line of different sea salts. More to come on those!

After a delicious steak dinner we found our way to our hotel, the Mirror Lake Inn. This place does it right! Awe-inspiring views of Mirror Lake, beautiful and spacious rooms, and great food. Our jaws dropped as we entered our room overlooking the lake. The next day we took a gondola ride up Little Whiteface mountain (don’t let the name fool you). Once at the top, we were able to walk around and take in the gorgeous views of the surrounding region.

That night, we ordered from the restaurant at the hotel directly to our room. This is the best kind of restaurant when you have a baby. We put Peter down for the night, and sat on our room’s patio looking out on the lake.  It felt like a real date night!

We will always love Lake Placid, and we hope you get a chance to experience it for yourself!
