Insights on Literature, etiquette, and Beauty from a Catholic wife and mom

Mike and I made our Christmas gifts for our family and friends this year. One of our goals this Christmas Season is simplicity. Making homemade gifts allowed us to focus on this virtue in a unique way. If you have never made a homemade gift for someone – do it! Not only is it a humbling act, but when you make a gift for someone it allows you to take the time to contemplate the recipient in a deep way as you prepare and perfect whatever it is you are making. We were filled with so much joy as we made each gift.

We decided to make homemade beeswax candles as one of our gifts this Christmas. I wanted to make beeswax candles after researching the incredible benefits of beeswax a few months ago. I contacted our friend who is a beekeeper and he generously gave us beeswax from his bees. It was one of the best gifts we have ever received! After seeing (and smelling!) the beeswax we could not wait to get to work on our Christmas gifts!

This Christmas was our first time making beeswax candles. After doing a bit of research we came up with list of products to purchase to make the process easier. We picked an afternoon to make them, put on some Christmas music, and had so much fun! In about two hours we had all of our eighteen three-inch candles made. It was the perfect family project to do on a wintry day!

Homemade Beeswax Candles

Here’s What You Will Need

beeswax (if you are not a beekeeper or if you are not friends with a beekeeper, here is a good choice)
wicks with stickers
3″ glass mason jars (we purchased two sets of twelve)
dowel rods
candle making pitcher
5-quart pot with a few inches of water in it

Here’s How To Make It

  1. Place 5-quart pot with water on stove top over medium-low heat. Place candle making pitcher with beeswax in it inside the 5-quart pot. Allow the wax to slowly melt.
  2. While wax is melting prepare the jars. Place 3M sticker on bottom of each wick. Press wick (sticker side down) firmly to bottom-center of each jar. Wrap remainder of wick around a dowel to help stabilize wick.
  3. Once wax has melted, slowly pour wax into prepared jars.
  4. Allow jars to cool and wax to set for twenty-four hours.
  5. Carefully remove the dowel, trim the wick, and enjoy your candle!
